Technology developed to kill viruses in donated organs

Today, donor agencies need thousands of people, but not all receive them. Perhaps a new method of virus removal will solve this problem, as many of the donated organs do not reach recipients because of infections that make them unsuitable for transplant. The technology involves washing their cavities and blood vessels non-toxic liquid preservative and destruction of bacteria using two types of light.

The method was invented by Professor Marcelo Sapele from the University of Toronto. Previously doctors had already obezzarajivatmi bodies by replacing the blood with fluid to eliminate viruses, but the technology was not as effective as we would like. For disinfection of blood was used ultraviolet glow — why not combine these technologies together for best result?

To realize his idea into reality, Marcelo Cypel teamed up with Wanderlei Bagnato from the Brazilian University of são Paulo. They created the device, which is composed of harmless preservative enters in virus-infected lungs liquid that absorbs red light with a wavelength of 660 nanometers. The resulting energy causes damage to membranes and genetic material, even such viruses as hepatitis C and HIV-1.

In addition to the red light, the device emits and ultraviolet, which affects the constantly circulating inside the body fluid. One litre of solution is very expensive, but it lasts for hundreds of cleaning agencies.

Laboratory tests showed that after the new therapy for transplant organs really cleansed from dangerous infections. It is about ten people who were transplanted decontaminated in a new way easy — they are easily caught, and the recipients didn’t even have to take antibiotics, while others often receive a three-month course of antiviral drugs.
